Places to Eat in Chester

Thank you to Claire Chatterton for providing us with the following great information!

The following are all on or off Northgate Street.

  • Chester has a traditional Market hall across from the hotel – it looks a bit grotty from the outside but is worth exploring. There is a traditional (and reasonable) market café inside where there is a wide menu including traditional British breakfast (available all day!) plus the market now has lots of other food outlets too. It is also opens until late on Fridays and Saturdays (8am-10pm) so an option for those who want a quick evening meal or snack.
  • The Cathedral is very near too and has a café in a beautiful Medieval Refectory.
  • Next to the town hall there is a great, award winning fish and chip shop, Blackstocks, which does mini portions also.
  • Again nearby is an innovative arts complex, Storyhouse, which includes a cinema. library and theatre plus a café that serves Middle Eastern food – again good for smaller portions. They are open from 8 am until 11 pm every day and serve food until mid-evening so again an option for the evening too (though maybe busy before 7.30 pm if there is a play on in the theatre)
  • I love this independent café. Marmalade, a few minutes’ walk up Northgate Street  opposite the Post Office – they are also great for gluten free options  and home made food. It looks small downstairs but has a large upstairs.
  • There are lots of chains around – my favourite is Pret A Manger (opposite Starbucks)  which again has a large upstairs and great coffee and sandwiches / salads.
  • There are several traditional pubs – my favourite is the Coach House which has a big menu and  is an option for lunch or evening meal and great for a traditional Sunday roast dinner for anyone staying!

In terms of the evening other options are Italian – both these restaurants are excellent and run by the same family-

Also about 10 mins walk – in an historic building by the canal – Telford’s Warehouse

For anyone vegetarian or vegan all of those listed above should include some options. I know of one dedicated Vegan Café – the Jaunty Goat – again on Northgate Street. NB IT doesn’t take cash, only bank cards.
